Trichur Rain Centre

Another rain centre has been functioning successfully in Trichur since the beginning of this year. With the tireless efforts of Dr. Jos. C. Raphael, the rain centre has been an instant success in Trichur. The rain centre has been funded by DFW Indian Lions Club members in Dallas, U.S.A. Trichur District Collector is the Chairman of the Rain Centre.

Volunteers from the rain centre conducted free training for the public on World Water Day, March 22nd 2004, on Rainwater Harvesting with Rain Centre, Trichur tremendous response. About 60 people from Trichur attended the training. Thereafter, one of the leading Malayalam newspapers, Malayala Manorama, took up the RWH as their programme in Kerala called “Palathully”. It helped Rain Centre Trichur to propagate the subject in Trichur District deeply. To date, the rain centre has conducted more than 53 seminars in different locations of Trichur with Malayala Manorama alone. Apart from that a total of 49 classes were held at Kerala Institute of Local Administration, Extention Training Centre of Kerala Agricultural University and different locations of Trichur and outside the district depends upon the request from various organizations on RWH. It has educated over 20,000 participants on the benefits of RWH in the year 2004 as of October 15th. Rain Centre has also participated in Malayala Manorama's phone in programme and face to face programme on RWH.

Trichur Pooram Exhibition is conducted in April-May months at Trissur Pooram Trissur Pooram Parambu (centre of the town). This year, the District Collector gave 400 sq.ft of land for the exhibition of RWH activities. A temporary rain centre was built in the area for the exhibition. Millions of people visited this temporary rain centre during the Trichur Pooram days in the summer season. It was a great success.

Rain Centre's ongoing activities including lectures and seminars Seminars at Rain Centre almost twice a week in the locations decided by the organisers of such programmes. Panchayati Raj Institutions also have taken up RWH. Training classes going on for panchayat members, village level extension officers, college & school students almost twice every week. For now, all the activities are in and around Trichur district. But the mission and vision of Trichur Rain Centre is to achieve water security for all Keralites through Water Literacy (Hydrological) Programmes.
